Louisiana Car Accident Statistics

Louisiana car accident statistics help you understand the areas of risk when you’re on the road, and potentially help you drive more cautiously. Even if you are involved in an accident, this information can help you determine who the at-fault driver was in order to file a claim for your compensation.

Fatal Car Accident Statistics in the United States

Thousands of car accidents happen every single day across Louisiana, resulting in varying degrees of personal injury and sometimes death. The leading causes of these car, motorcycle, and truck accidents are distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding. Drunk and impaired driving is reported as a leading factor in car accident deaths.

Every year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) releases information on fatal car accidents throughout the United States. In 2023, there were 37,654 fatal crashes. This included car wrecks, SUV/pickup crashes, truck accidents, motorcycle crashes, bicycle accidents, and pedestrian accidents throughout the nation.

Fatal Versus Injury Accidents in Louisiana

According to data gathered by the Louisiana State University (LSU) Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS) in 2025, the state of Louisiana saw:

Baton Rouge car accident statistics included 33 fatalities and 5,720 suspected injuries. It had the second-highest number of fatalities and suspected injuries in the state after New Orleans.

What Are Common Causes of Traffic Accidents in Louisiana?

The cause of a traffic accident is important for several reasons. Knowing these causes can help you limit your own risk. If an accident does happen, the cause of the crash is important for determining the liable party. Some common reasons for accidents in Louisiana include:

  • Distracted driving. Drivers who don’t pay attention to the road cause a lot of accidents. CARTS reported 20,111 distracted or inattentive drivers in injury or fatal accidents in 2025, and most of them were inattentive. Although these accidents are more likely to cause property damage, they can also lead to injuries and death. There were 57,091 property damage-only accidents caused by inattentive driving, 19,528 suspected injury accidents, and 155 fatal accidents.
  • Driving under the influence. Those who operate under the influence of drugs or alcohol put everyone on the road at risk. There were 222 fatal alcohol-related accidents in 2025 in the state, and 2,299 injury accidents that were alcohol-related.  There were 5,237 property damage-only accidents that involved alcohol, which made up almost 5% of all property damage accidents. In comparison, alcohol-related alcohol crashes were over 31% of all fatal crashes. Alcohol crashes are disproportionately fatal.
  • Reckless driving and moving violations. Reckless and aggressive driving can increase the risk of an accident. This includes behaviors like dangerous passing, failing to yield, speeding, brake checking, running red lights and stop signs, and tailgating. Nearly 9% of fatal and injury vehicle accidents involved a driver who failed to yield the right-of-way in 2025, 6% involved a driver following too closely, and 2% involved running a red light.
  • Dangerous road conditions. Hazardous road conditions can include construction zones, inclement weather, poorly maintained roadways, and congestion. In 2025, over 4% of accidents involved regular congestion on the road, and under 4% of accidents involved wet, slushy, icy, or snowy roads. It’s important that drivers reduce their speeds in dangerous conditions and drive appropriately and defensively.

In most accidents, a driver is liable for the crash, although there may be exceptions.

Why Is This Important for Louisiana Drivers?

It’s important that Louisiana drivers understand the risks on the road and know potential causes of accidents if they are involved in one.

After a car crash, you can financially recover your damages by filing a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance. To successfully file this claim, you have to prove that the other driver is liable for your accident, meaning their negligence and error were the cause of the accident.

By knowing what to look for after an accident, you may be able to gather important evidence to support your claim. You may see that the other driver’s phone was out, or you saw them driving recklessly before the crash.

Louisiana Laws That Impact Car Accident Claims

There are several Louisiana car accident laws that can have legal implications for your claim after a crash. It’s important to consider:

  • Legal deadlines. There is a time limit that you need to file your claim by when you are filing a civil claim with a city court or judicial district court. If you miss this deadline, called the statute of limitations or liberative prescription, you will be barred from compensation. Before a civil claim, you must file an insurance claim as soon as possible after an accident.
  • Insurance requirements. Drivers in Louisiana are required to carry a minimum level of insurance coverage. If you are seriously injured, this can make it harder to recover the full cost of your damages, as you will be limited by these coverage limits.
  • Comparative fault. If you are found partially to blame for the accident in 2026 and beyond, then you may see your compensation limited or even be unable to file a claim if you are more than 51% at fault.

FAQs

Q: How Many Car Accidents and Traffic Fatalities Occurred in Louisiana in Recent Years?

A: In recent years, from 2021 to 2025, there were approximately 538,000 property damage-only car accidents, 200,000 suspected injury accidents, 3,907 fatal accidents, and 4,185 traffic fatalities in Louisiana. There have also been about 518,000 suspected injuries in that time. If you are in a vehicle collision, it is important to report the accident.

Q: What Trends Do Louisiana Crash Data Reports Show for Fatal and Injury-Related Accidents?

A: From 2021 to 2025, LSU CARTS has shown that fatalities and fatal crashes are trending down in Louisiana, and so are suspected injuries and crashes. Rates for fatal and injury crashes are also decreasing, including the rate by population, licensed drivers, and vehicle miles traveled. However, you should always remain cautious on the road.

Q: What Factors Contribute to Louisiana’s High Crash Rates?

A: There are several factors that contribute to Louisiana’s high crash rates, including expected factors like speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and driving under the influence. There are also other factors, such as the major freight transportation corridors of I-20 and I-10 to I-12. This increases congestion and the number of commercial vehicles on the roads.

Q: How Do Louisiana’s Road Fatality Rates Compare With National Averages?

A: Louisiana had a road fatality rate of 17.7 deaths per 100,000 population, compared to the national rate of 12.2 per 100,000 population in 2023. The state also had a fatality rate of 1.46 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT), while the national rate was 1.26 per 100 million VMT.
