Nexium (PPI)

WHAT IS NEXIUM?

INFORMATION AND WHAT TO DO

What is Nexium? Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is one of the most widely sold drugs in the whole entire world. It is used for reducing stomach acid secretion.
It also affects parietal cells in the stomach wall. The cells secrete hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor. The intrinsic factor is a very important factor in the absorption of vitamin B12.

What Do We Use It For?

Nexium is used for a lot of conditions. Dyspepsia and indigestion are common conditions Nexium treats. Conditions such as peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and Zollinger – Ellison syndrome are less common conditions that Nexium can treat as well. Patients who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can use Nexium as well.
It has been said that NSAIDs can produce stomach ulcers so Nexium is recommended because it prevents the ulcers from taking form. There are others PPIs besides Nexium as well. There is Aciphex, Zegerid, Prilosec, Protonix, and Prevacid. Although the effects of Nexium on mild symptoms are comparable to other drugs, it is said to be more effective than other drugs for more severe symptoms. It also improves esophageal healing rates.

Side Effects

Nexium comes with a lot of side effects. Some are common and some are less common. The most common are headaches, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, decreased appetite, dry mouth, constipation, and abdominal pain. The less common side effects range from allergic reactions and dark urine all the way to muscle spasms and seizures. If anyone has any of these symptoms they should contact a doctor immediately.
Along with side effects there are quite a few risks that come with Nexium as well. These risks include hip fracture, kidney damage, polyps, and pneumonia and clostridium difficile infection. Overdosing is also something that can happen when consuming Nexium. Results from overdosing are confusion, drowsiness, vision problems, nausea, sweating, headaches, dry mouth, and rapid heartbeats.
