Maritime Liens

Information & What To Do

Filing a maritime lien can significantly improve the likelihood that a plaintiff will eventually get compensation, should the plaintiff negotiate a settlement agreement or win a verdict. During the legal process, it also puts the defendant on notice that you are serious about getting the compensation you deserve. The personal injury lawyers at Murphy Law Firm have extensive experience in maritime accident cases and the recovery of damages. We provide aggressive representation in unseaworthiness claims and other cases where a vessel’s owners are liable for tort claim damages. When representing you, our maritime accident attorneys will work tirelessly to obtain the best possible jury award or settlement for you. We offer a free consultation to discuss your case and explain your options. Just fill out our form to schedule or call our Baton Rouge office at (225) 269-4928.

The Use of Liens in Maritime Accident Cases

In a land-based personal injury case, obtaining a pre-judgment security for a claim is generally not permitted. However, in a maritime injury case, you can file a lien against the vessel before the final resolution of the case. Filing a lien puts an encumbrance on the vessel, and it increases the chances that a plaintiff will eventually collect damages. Should the settlement or jury award not be forthcoming, the lien can enable the plaintiff to arrest the vessel in satisfaction of the settlement or award. Maritime liens are especially useful in cases involving vessels whose owners are located in another state or foreign countries.

At Murphy Law Firm, our personal injury lawyers take all steps necessary to protect the rights of our clients. This includes filing a maritime lien when we believe that it serves the interests of our client and maximizes their chances at recovering compensation for their injuries.
