Paragard IUD

Information & What To Do
What Is The Paragard IUD?

Paragard is an intrauterine birth control device that uses copper instead of hormones. It is a T-shaped device with copper wrapped around both arms and the trunk. The copper produces an inflammatory reaction in the uterus that acts as a spermicide, helping to prevent fertilization. The Paragard IUD can remain inserted for up to ten years and is the only hormone-free IUD on the market, making it one of the most popular options for birth control out there.

Injuries Associated With Paragard IUD

Women can become seriously injured during the removal of the Paragard IUD. During the removal process, which is supposed to be as simple as the insertion, pieces of the device can break off or fracture. This may require additional surgery to remove the fractured pieces. Some women have had to undergo hysterectomies to remove all of the devices. Other injuries and side effects associated with the Paragard IUD include:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Migration of the device
  • Copper wire left in the body
  • Pelvic pain
  • Scarring
  • Organ damage
