Baton Rouge Car Accident Statistics 2026

Car accidents are among the most common causes of personal injury, and they happen nearly every day. A car wreck can cause minor scrapes, or it can lead to severe injuries and death. Even drivers who remain safe on the road can find themselves in an accident. It can be helpful to understand the Baton Rouge car accident statistics so you can be aware of more hazardous locations and how collisions happen.

Baton Rouge Car Collisions

In Baton Rouge, there were 33 reported fatalities in vehicle crashes in 2025, down from 36 in 2024, according to Louisiana State University’s Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS). There were 5,720 suspected injuries in collisions in the city, up from 5,600 in 2024.

I-10 and I-12 have nearly 360 miles of road in Louisiana, and both interstates are in Baton Rouge. These interstates increase commercial traffic and congestion, increasing the risks of accidents. Other dangerous roads include US-61 or Airline Highway, US-190 or Florida Boulevard, and Essen Lane.

Impaired Driving

Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol greatly increases the chances of an accident. Drivers are less likely to make rational decisions, and they will have slower reaction speeds. Twelve of the 31 reported fatalities in Baton Rouge were in alcohol-related crashes. Out of the 2025 injuries in crashes, 322 of them are suspected to be alcohol-related.

In East Baton Rouge Parish, 23 of the 62 fatal crashes were alcohol-related in 2025, amounting to 37.10% of all fatal crashes. In comparison, there were 276 suspected injury-inducing alcohol-related crashes, making up only 5.62% of the total suspected injury crashes. Alcohol is overrepresented in fatal crashes compared to injury accidents.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is a common cause of collisions. In most cases where distracted driving was involved in a collision in East Baton Rouge Parish, it was caused by inattentiveness. Forty crashes out of the 4,912 suspected injury crashes were also caused by a cell phone or another device. Twelve injury collisions were caused by talking or listening distractions.

Other Car Collision Statistics

In East Baton Rouge Parish, there was a fatal crash rate of 1.33 per 100,000 population in 2024 and a suspected injury crash rate of 109.35. The 62 fatal crashes in the parish in 2025 led to 68 fatalities; 4,912 suspected injury crashes also occurred, causing 7,885 suspected injuries. There were also approximately 15,430 crashes where there were no apparent injuries.

Car Accidents in the State

In Louisiana, there were 708 fatal crashes and 35,408 suspected injury crashes in 2025. Looking at the first harmful event of those collisions, 73.03% involved collisions with a moving motor vehicle. This made up 26,110 suspected injury collisions and 267 fatal collisions.

Out of all the fatal crashes in the state, the first harmful event in 20.97% of them was a collision with a pedestrian, the next most common cause after a collision with a vehicle in motion. In comparison, only 3.08% of injury accidents had the first harmful event be a collision with a pedestrian. These collisions are disproportionately fatal.

Of the suspected injury crashes, the next-most common cause of suspected injury crashes after a motor vehicle collision was colliding with a ditch, which made up 3.97% of total injury collisions.
